Hi,

I have an EVGA GTX 560 Ti and it mostly works, but I intermittently get coloured squares all over the screen, followed by the system appearing to crash. Interestingly, the mouse still works at this point but nothing else on the screen will update as I click things.

I've tried two versions of OS X. Under 10.7.4 I used MultiBeast's OpenCL patcher and had the crashes. I then reverted the patch and tried the drivers from nVidia's site but still had the crashes. I've also tried 10.8 with unmodified Apple-supplied drivers and it still happens. It therefore doesn't seem to be a driver issue.

My system is currently pretty much a clean slate. I have:

  • Chimera 1.10
  • FakeSMC
  • an Ethernet kext
  • GraphicsEnabler=Yes
  • PCIRootUID=0
  • Mac Pro 3,1
  • no DSDT (my GA-Z77M-D3H doesn't seem to need it)
  • everything else is as supplied by Apple in 10.8 (installed from a UniBeast drive)

I understand that 10.8 isn't supported yet but as noted the issue also happens in 10.7.4. I'm prepared to roll back if I have to but I expect that the same fix will work for both OSes.

Any suggestions? :)

does this happen in windows? it almost seems like the card is possibly slowly failing until it finally crashes possibly because of heat or faulty memory. check if the card's fan is spinning and if the card isn't getting too hot while running in OSX.

Thanks for the suggestion. The fan's spinning so it looks like I'll need to try Windows. I've found a Windows utility that claims to test the video card so I'll run it while I'm at work and see whether it's failed by the time I get home.

Update: The card is emitting a high-pitched squeal under Windows so it's going in for replacement. I'll post back once I get the new one but it looks like that's the problem. Thanks for your help! :D

I sometimes have this issue with my GTX. 560 non ti. I havnt been able to fix it.

I have the same card. What I had to do was to extract my own cards ROM from within Windows using GPU-Z

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

Rename the ROM file as 10de_1201.rom (only for 560 non-ti cards, other cards change the 1201 to your cards ID) and place it into your EXTRA folder

Then in your org.chameleon.Boot.plist add the lines

<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>UseNvidiaROM</key>
<string>Yes</string>

For me, my first reboot resulted in a black screen.
But since then it has always worked and I have not experienced any graphical glitches, system freezes or crashes.

You still need to use Multibeast Gxx enabler
But do not use the official Nvidia fermi drivers.

(I use 10.7.4 and chimera 1.10)

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about that (I used to have to do it under 10.6 with a different card). If the replacement card still has the problem then I'll give that a go.

Edit: After thinking about it some more, the whine when running the stress test could be "legitimate", after all the tester IS stressing the card and I don't hear the noise under normal use. I haven't actually sent the card back yet so I'll try the ROM image over the weekend and see whether the issue goes away. Hopefully you've saved me from two days without a video card :D

Just curious how big the rom file is. I don't Windows installed and I would have to get a drive to install it on.
If its not to big can someone post it for the 560 non ti?
Thanks

It's 63488 bytes for my Ti, so I expect that the non-Ti will be a similar size.

No crashes so far, but I'll give it a couple more days.
