Hi,

After installing Yosemite it turned out that there is a clicking sound almost all the time - I think it's from HDD, but I'm not sure. On Windows 8.1 I don't hear it, when I launch Yosemite it just appears and I don't know if it's safe to use Yosemite with that. Do you know wha it might be and if it's possible to get rid of it?

You need to first determine what device is making the noise.

I don't know how, but I'll try to find out what's making that sound and I'll write here.

on my testmac hdd (hitachi 500gb 7200upm) i have the same clicking sound only with yosemite. its 100 percent from the hdd. i tested the hdd with drive genius 3 but no errors detected.
its a loud clicking sound.

It is probably the drive parking/unparking the head. Some HDDs are just clicky that way.

If you want silence, get an SSD.

On Windows this issue is not present, so it has to be sth with Yosemite. I think that Mavericks didn't have this problem too. I hope it won't cause any damage to my HDD.

OS X is not Windows. It may have different behavior regarding sleeping the HDD.

I think this will fix your issue: http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/
I used it with great success on both hitachi 750gb and wd scorpio black 750gb. Good luck!

Exactly this. I've been manually setting APM for my hard drives for years now (since the big "Ubuntu-is-killing-my-HDD"-gate) and hdapm is a great tool for doing this on Macs. Highly recommended.

Thanks, I'll try that as soon as I launch Yosemite. For now I'll be using Windows mainly, because on Yosemite my wi-fi card does not work so it's not really useful for now.

If it works I'll update this thread.
