After charging my MacBook Pro 15' (Early 2010) for 6 years without an hiccup the original charger which came with the MacBook stopped working. I had no idea what happened i was using my laptop as usual and i heard a tiny puffff noise from the charger and the laptop stopped charging, although it was not a loud noise i knew something happened to my MacBook charger.
Checked the mag safe pins for voltage using multimeter and there was no output from the charger. Instead of checking the charger cord i opened the charger with a Long Nose Plier. Sure enough i could smell the electronic's burnt smell.
Since original MacBook chargers are very expensive i though of buying a cheap fake look-alike ones, but these fake look-alike ones are not so cheap and had bad reviews. So i decided to make my own cheap good charger using HP genuine laptop power brick.
Brought the 65W HP laptop charger for very reasonable price which had similar rating as Macbook's original charger except the wattage.
Original MacBook Pro 15' charger
85W.
16.5v - 18.5v
4.6A Max
HP Laptop Genuine charger
65W
19.5v
3.33A Max
Along with the HP charger i also brought the "AC Power Adapter Charger Cable DC Repair Cord for Apple Macbook MagSafe 1 L 45W 60W 85W".
White Cord is +Ve and Black cord is -Ve
Once i received both these items it took me 15 mins to get my charger ready.
Chopped both HP charger and Mag-Safe cord.
HP charger > White is +Ve, Black is -Ve and Blue is Ground.
Mag-Safe charger cable > White Cord is +Ve and Black cord is -Ve
Soldered both HP charger cords and Mag-safe cords.
Finished product. Tapped the joints and using the Velcro tied both cords.
Orage light while charging and green when battery is fully charged.
The charger is fully functional and chargers the laptop while usage just like the original charger.
The HP charger doesn't get hot while charging the MacBook, in fact it stays much cooler than the original MacBook charger.
