Just got the Gigabyte H55N-USB3 mini-ITX board, and it's got the dreaded 8111E.

Works just fine with the official drivers, but 32bit only.

Did a fair bit of poking around with sources for RealtekR1000SL and managed to get 8111E inserted, loaded, and recognized in 64bit. Although I ran into a roadblock with Ethernet address not picking up DHCP- it remains Self-Assigned IP, connected, but no internet. Seems like it's possible that we should be able to insert the Linux code into RealtekR1000SL.

Here's the official thread on Insanelymac to read the back-story.

If anyone can help out- here's the link to download the RealtekR1000SL.kext source:

Ok, so I ended up starting over from scratch- have a .zip of my progress so far. Still need to add the last method for 8111E from the linux to the unix.

It's a direct copy from the linux to the RealtekR1000SL- it's just a matter of getting the code in there. You can compare the code.

I tried posting this to the thread that contained the files I used to make this but it's locked so I'll start a new one. Can someone try this out and tell me if it works with 8111E chips in 64-bit? I want to buy a newer board with this chip but not if the network ports dont work. So I figured, like tonymac, maybe I could get it working. I'm not a developer so I make no promises. And no criticism please.

Cross your fingers.

Just tried it on 8111E- it's getting an IP address, and bonjour networking is working in 64bit mode, but I'm not able to get online. I've successfully copied a file over on my home network.

Better progress than I made- what exactly did you change?

Also- Lnx2Mac is working on this exact modification and cleaning up some general bugs- he'll be sharing his work on this thread I'm sure. ;)

Just cleaned up some stuff and added a butt load more. I'll keep plugging away and post my results. I'll post the source in a bit.

You mentioned you had DHCP problems. Can you manually set an IP address? You might also try manually setting the ethernet speed to 1000baseT.

Like I said I'm not a developer… just determined.

Same. Wired networking working- screensharing, AFP, etc... but no internet.

So close. It would be so much easier if I had an 8111E.

I'm calling it a night. Here is what I got. Hopefully a real developer picks it up. :)
