Hello,

Looking for a little advice before undertaking a big hackintosh build. I have made up this spec from the $1200 build listed in this site, with a few changes. Please see the spec below :

Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
Processor : Intel Core i7 (870) 2.93GHz
Heatsink : Scythe Mugen Mugen
RAM : Corsair 16Gb DDR3 1600Mhz
Graphics : Radeon HD 5770 1Gb DDR5
SSD : Crucial 64Gb M4 Solid State Drive
HDD : 2 x Western Digital 2TB 7200 RPM
Optical : LG 10x BD/DVD/CD Writer with LightScribe
PSU : Corsair 650W Power Supply
Case : Fractal Design Core 3000
Cables : Will be purchased as needed, Serial ATA etc)
Cooling : Air via 3 Fans (1 front, 1 bottom and 1 back)
OS : OS X Lion 10.7 (will be out by the time this is built)
Keyboard : Apple Bluetooth Keyboard
Mouse : Apple magic trackpad

Couple of queries before buying components :

1. The build I started with, had 8Gb of RAM, could i have 16? If so, what configuration and make?

2. I have chosen to have a 64Gb SSD for my OS drive - will this work?

3. Am I wasting time/money having a Blu-Ray drive?

4. What solutions are there for Wifi, Bluetooth?

5. Would a Firewire 800 card work in this, or should i stick with eSata on motherboard?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you are looking for power, why not get a Sandy Bridge system? It may have small problems but they will probably be fixed over time.

Of you go for the new system, remember that the platform use triple memory. I would recommend 3x4GB memory, total of 12GB. If that is little, get 3x4GB more and then a total of 24GB.

True, i am looking for power....lots of it, I will be doing lots of video editing and converting of videos, as well as all the usual daily stuff (streaming music, movies etc)

This system will be bought and build over a 4 month period, so if I need to buy an expensive CPU and motherboard I will - I want a system that will really last.

Thanks

Isnt video editing what Sandy Bridge is made for :?:

Probably! What would be the equivalent Sandy Bridge? i7-2600?

...sorry, needing help here :)

I love the set up I have, it's been great.
I have it set up with 12GB of ram right now but will get 12GB more down the road. I game on this system with no issues and run Paint Shop Pro X2 flawlessly (in Win7 of course) with a crap load of photos open at once. I also have it set up with Parallels throwing 8GB or ram at Windows in a virtual environment and can also run some halfway decent games on it there as well.
I know some of the 1366 socket items are getting cheaper in anticipation of the 2011 socket items but that doesn't mean the 1366 is a slouch by any means lol Both 1366 and 1155 have there strong points and it's all in a matter of what you want and need your build to do.

Thanks to all who have replied - I have settled on the following spec :

Motherboard : Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0)
Processor : Intel Core i7 (950) 3.06GHz (overclock to 4.0GHz)
Heatsink : Thermaltake Frio
RAM : Corsair 16Gb DDR3 1600Mhz
Graphics : Radeon HD 5770 1Gb DDR5
SSD : Crucial 64Gb M4 Solid State Drive
HDD : 2 x Western Digital 2TB 7200 RPM
Optical : Sony Optiarc AD-7241S-0B
PSU : Corsair Professional Series Gold 850W
Case : Fractal Design - Define R3 Titanium Grey
Cables : Will be purchased as needed, Serial ATA etc)
Cooling : Air via 3 Fans (1 front, 1 bottom and 1 back)
Fan Controller : NesteQ MaxZero 8-Channel Fan Controller / Temperature Monitor
OS : OS X Lion 10.7 (will be out by the time this is built)
Keyboard : Apple Bluetooth Keyboard
Mouse : Apple magic trackpad

Again, thanks for all the advice.....now start buying
