Hello - newbie with first post here!
Is there any practical reason why Linux will not install satisfactorily on Apple hardware?

My REAL problem is that having installed a new hard drive in my old iMac I cannot now add an Apple operating system. Trying to start the machine with Cmd - R does NOT bring up the Mac OSX Disk Utility and my attempts to use my original set-up disk (Leopard) or my purchased Snow Leopard disk have failed.
