The Antec 300 midtower casing is a fairly decent starting point for a first time build. It's roughly the same footprint and weight of a G5/Mac Pro case and offers similar, if not better, accessibility and air flow to Apple's own design. The Antec 300 is a steel construction with a removeable panel on both sides of the system, allowing for quick and easy access to all your components and the motherboard so even the most stubborn of cooling kits can be installed without having to uproot the motherboard just to add a security bracket underneath the CPU.
The casing has a removeable front bezel and has several areas for installing your 3.5" and 5.25" drives and devices, and even has a space for one additional 2.5" drive at the bottom, such as a solid state drive. There is also a set of USB and audio ports on the front of the casing for added accessibility.
Overall, the casing is very sturdy, while flexible for a mix of cooling and upgrade options. You may even likely gut this casing for several generations of computer configurations to come.
Here's a pic of my setup made up to look like one of the PowerBooks from the late 90's. The black matte paint of the casing really worked well with those white logo stickers Apple likes to give away with every system and OS upgrade.
