Well I am an avid Mac guy, I own a Mac Pro (early 08), 5 iMacs, 2 MacBook Pro's 4 Apple TV's 2cd gen. and an iPhone 4s. Yes I should own apple stock. Anyhow, I read a forum on 9to5mac about building a sub $400.00 mac so I started to check into it, and here I am.
I have built some windows machines in the past but never an Apple machine. So, I decided to see if I could build a Hackintosh. I used one of the CustomBeast options so there would be plenty of support.
This thing is extremely fast and relatively quiet for having 5 fans inside. It boots up in under 45 sec. as compared to my Mac Pro's 1:35 sec. The USB 3 headers in the front of the case are a little finicky - if you unplug something it gives a kernel panic. Not a big thing for me since I don't use USB 3. Graphics is great although I had to switch primary monitors in order to get 2048x1280 on my 30".
Since I had OSX running on another machine getting lion was pretty simple. I used the UniBeast/MultiBeast method, and I used these instructions:
http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/10/unibeast-install-mac-os-x-lion-using.html
Once I did that, I kept getting stuck at the apple logo screen. I would get the with a slash through it to it would hang at the grey spinning wheel. I kept reading about entering boot flags but could not figure out how, and no one explained it. so here is the explanation:
when the boot screen comes up (Before the grey apple logo) with the tonymac apple and the usb graphic you need to tope in any "flag" i.e.. "GraphicEnabler=No" Or "PCIRootUID=0" The line to enter it does not show until you start typing.
I had to use the "GraphicEnabler=No" to get my system to boot (my graphics card came in a few days after the rest so I tried without the card. once I install the card everything booted up fine).
MAKE A BACKUP once you boot up successfully. I learned the hard way after crashing my system about a dozen times and having to re-install my OS.
After you run MultiBeast, you will get your network adapter screen to come up install it. Reboot.
There is a new video out today. I think he changes something before he reboots.
Audio was a pain. I kept running MultiBeast after reading several forums - one said you might have to run it several times (Which I Did). You need to delete the "HDAenabler8XXX.kext" and ran MultiBeast again checking the Audio Chipset you have - mine was Realtec889. Finally it worked.
Just a note. every time I tried installing the voodoo drivers it would crash my system and I would have to re-install the OS
iCloud was another issue
you need to run a serial# generator
you can download the program here:
http://tools.inmac.org/
it's pretty self explanatory Just remember to select the right processor and a mating computer.
it will update the SMBios.plst in your extras folder.
now,
Open the folder "Extras" (If you do not have it Download Chimera and run it.)
in the extras folder there is a file named "org.chameleon.Boot.plist"
it will look like this:
- <key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>npci=0x2000 darkwake=0</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>2</string>
<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>UseKernelCache</key>
<string>Yes</string>
- <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
- <key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>npci=0x2000 darkwake=0</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>2</string>
<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>UseKernelCache</key>
<string>Yes</string>
Go to your Network Preferences and delete your Ethernet connection. Reboot.
You will probably have to add the Ethernet connection again. Go to your Network preferences and click the + at the bottom. That got my system working.
I am up and running
- 1 ssd
3 HD's
2 monitors with no problems
