This begs some questions. Are backups made without this update unreliable (in whatever way that might be)? Does this have any impact on anyone using a 10.7, 10.7.1 or 10.7.2 bootable install media?

I restored a couple times using time machine backups. I never had any problems really.

Anyone have any issues updating via Software Update? Heck, anyone have any issues at all with this update?

Your bios is written on the motherboard's bios' chip. The update on the HDD. No relationship, then.
