I'm curious to know if theirs another way to power the front panel without splicing into the main 24 pin power cord?

Seems you need
Ground
12V
3.3V
5V

Can this be achieved by splicing into a sata cable?

The ground 12v and 5v could be acquired by using a molex cale yes, however the 3.3v either you would have to take from the 24pin motherboard plug or by making a circuit to step down the voltage. probably a transformer of some type would do the job.

Why wouldn't the 3.3v work on the sata cable? It has all the appropriate configurations.

Because im silly! i didn't know sata power has 3.3v. But in that case of course it should work. If the computer is on all the molex 4pin or sata power cables are on. so just splice it i guess?

Hey gus, is the front panel of the Mac Pro the same as the late 2005 G5?

no, well the ones i have seen are different. the mac pro has firewire 800 and also 2 usb i think. But as we've talked about. the early and late 2005 g5 front panels should be good to swap in and out, just need to figure out how to mount it!
