I've had Catalina running on this old socket 775 for a while now with no problems. I have 2 hdd fitted. One boots to Mojave the other to Catalina.
Catalina is the default boot. This morning I booted it up to see some errors as it eventually got to the clover screen, and then continued to boot. It crawled on the apple logo about 20 times slower than normal. Eventually I got to the desktop with the hard disk light nearly always on. I opened disk Utility, ran first aid which reported no problems.
I checked the efi partition and looked inside the clover folder to find it empty!
So I dragged a backup copy of the bootloader in the efi partition.
For ages while on the desktop the hdd was reading and writing as if defragmenting.
Eventually after 30min it stopped. But everything was still running slow.
I rebooted, but same problem.
S.m.a.r.t reports verified, but do you think the hdd is dieing?
